Archie Parnell's profile

South Carolina and DACA

A former senior advisor at Goldman Sachs, Archie Parnell ran for a seat in the 5th Congressional District in South Carolina in 2018. Archie Parnell’s platform included a commitment to creating Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policies for individuals who came to the United States unlawfully as children.

To remain in the United States under DACA, children who are now adults must meet certain conditions:. They must have arrived in the US before 2007 and have been younger than 16 years of age at the time of their arrival. To apply for DACA status, individuals must be between 15 and 31 years old and cannot have a criminal record. Finally, they are required to have resided in the United States since 2007, and be in school, hold a GED or diploma, or have served in the military with an honorable discharge.

For many hopefuls, DACA is about access: Prior to the passage of DACA legislation, children of unlawful immigrants were often marginalized as a result of their undocumented status. The new legislation allowed many DACA recipients to seek employment, aspire to complete degree programs, enter the military, and make contributions to the US. However, when the law was rescinded in 2018, the door was closed for many in the country—shutting them out of a dream that they once believed was attainable.
